WhatsApp Green Tick Verification: How to Apply and Why It Matters

WhatsApp Green Tick Verification: How to Apply and Why It Matters

    April 22, 2024

When you receive a WhatsApp message from a business with a green checkmark badge next to its name, that is the WhatsApp green tick — the official verification mark for Notable Brands on the platform. It signals that Meta has independently confirmed the business is who they say they are.

For e-commerce brands in MENA, the green tick is a trust signal that can meaningfully impact open rates, response rates, and brand credibility. Here is what you need to know.

What the Green Tick Actually Means

The green tick (technically, the "Official Business Account" badge) is different from a regular verified business account. There are two tiers:

Business Account (Default): Any business that completes the WhatsApp Business API onboarding gets a "Business Account" label. Your business name shows in the chat instead of your phone number. No badge.

Official Business Account (Green Tick): Meta proactively reviews and verifies notable brands. These accounts display a green checkmark badge next to the business name in the chat header and on the contact info page.

The distinction matters because the green tick is not just a compliance marker — customers associate it with legitimacy, particularly in markets where WhatsApp scams and impersonation are common concerns.

Who Qualifies for the Green Tick?

Meta does not publish a strict criteria list, but based on patterns across businesses that have been approved, the key factors are:

Brand notability: Meta looks for businesses that have a significant online presence — major news coverage, a strong social media following, recognition in your industry. Startups and small businesses rarely qualify early on.

Established Business Manager verification: Your Meta Business Manager must be fully verified with all business documents submitted and approved.

Active API usage: You need to be actively using the WhatsApp Business API through an official BSP, with a track record of compliant messaging.

No recent policy violations: Any history of spam complaints, policy violations, or account restrictions will disqualify you.

Phone number quality rating: Your phone number must have a "High" or "Medium" quality rating in Meta's system, which is earned by having low opt-out rates and no spam reports.

    How to Apply

The application process goes through Meta Business Manager:

    1. Log in to business.facebook.com and navigate to WhatsApp Manager
    2. Select your WhatsApp Business Account
    3. Go to Settings → Profile
    4. Look for the "Submit for Official Business Account Review" option (this only appears if your account meets preliminary criteria)
    5. Fill out the review form — this includes providing links to press coverage, your website, social media profiles, and a description of your business significance

Meta reviews applications manually. Timelines vary widely — anywhere from 2 weeks to several months. Approval is not guaranteed even if you submit.

If the option to apply is not visible in your account, it typically means your account has not yet met the baseline criteria (verification, API usage history, quality rating).

Can You Speed Up the Process?

Working through an official Meta Business Solution Provider (BSP) can help in several ways:

    • BSPs often have direct relationships with Meta business development teams who can flag priority reviews
    • They can advise on exactly what documentation to prepare and how to frame your notability case
    • Some BSPs have had success advocating on behalf of their larger clients

There is no shortcut that guarantees approval, but having the right partner helps.

Does the Green Tick Affect Deliverability?

Technically, no — message deliverability is based on your phone number quality rating, not your verification status. But practically, the green tick affects:

Customer trust and open rates: Studies in MENA markets show customers are more likely to open messages from verified businesses than unverified ones. Given the prevalence of WhatsApp impersonation scams in the region, the green tick is a meaningful trust signal.

Displayed business name: Official Business Accounts can display their business name even to contacts who have not saved their number. Unverified businesses show as phone numbers to unsaved contacts — a significant difference for cold outreach or new customers.

Brand perception: For enterprise brands and regional retailers, the green tick is increasingly an expectation, not a differentiator.

What to Do While You Wait (or If You Don't Qualify)

Focus on the things you can control:

    • Maintain a high quality rating: Keep opt-out rates below 2%, avoid message spam, and ensure all contacts have genuinely opted in
    • Build brand presence: Press mentions, social following, and online recognition all strengthen your eventual application
    • Verify your Meta Business Manager: Complete all available verification steps immediately
    • Use a clear, professional display name: Even without the green tick, a clean business name is better than a phone number

Many brands build very successful WhatsApp channels without the green tick. It is valuable — but it is not a prerequisite for effective WhatsApp marketing.

    The Bottom Line

If you are a notable brand with an established presence, it is worth applying for the green tick — but only after you have the basics right: Business Manager verified, API active, quality rating high, and a track record of compliant messaging.

If you are an early-stage brand or smaller business, focus on building the fundamentals first. The green tick will follow when the brand presence catches up.
